About GREEN-LOG
The world is experiencing unparalleled growth in last-mile transport following the unprecedented growth of e-commerce. This new reality brings a number of challenges to urban and peri-urban ecosystems and puts immense pressure on courier companies for seamless servicing of higher volume home deliveries. Against this backdrop, GREEN-LOG, the Horizon Europe co-funded project, aims to accelerate systemic changes and create last-mile delivery ecosystems that are economically, ecologically, and socially sustainable. GREEN-LOG offers Logistics-as-a-Service platforms for interconnected city logistics, automated delivery concepts using autonomous vehicles and delivery droids, cargo-bike-based innovations for sustainable micro-consolidation, and multimodal parcel deliveries integrating public transportation. The solutions are supported by networked city logistics dataspaces that supply dynamic services for proactive ecosystem optimisation while respecting the interests of stakeholders including consumers, businesses, and the city. The GREEN-LOG approach is deployed and validated in five Urban Living Labs, an inclusive set of demonstration sites that cover EU regions with different Urban Logistics characteristics and varying challenges. Three follower cities that experience rapid economic and social change and are highly interested in tailoring and replicating GREEN-LOG solutions will benefit from intensive transferability acceleration actions. |

 | Almost all attempts to decrease the impact of the last mile go through the carrier. Carriers are asked to consolidate in hubs, use pick-up points, or deliver outside specific time windows to reduce emissions and kilometers in dense urban areas. Yet, the effects of these attempts are somewhat limited. The lack of success is due to a combination of unsustainable business models, a reluctance to collaborate, and a hyper-competitive market. In its role as a President of POLIS, the City of Leuven hosted this year’s Annual POLIS Conference. With over 900 participants, the event was a great opportunity to spread the word about the work under development in GREEN-LOG. The GREEN-LOG representative from the City of Leuven, Ms Marij Lambert, presented the city’s activities within GREEN-LOG, in session “4D. When urban planning meets logistics: Pathways to SULPs”. The presentation focused on how the city empowers local businesses while talking about sustainable city logistics. About the POLIS Conference The Annual POLIS Conference is Europe’s leading sustainable urban mobility event, providing an opportunity for cities and regions to engage in unique plenaries, thought-provoking sessions, and interesting site visits and showcase their transport achievements to a large audience of mobility experts, practitioners, and decision-makers from both the public and private sectors from the EU and beyond. The GREEN-LOG team was excited to participate in the Urban Mobility Days 2023. This significant event took place on 4-6 October, in Seville, Spain, bringing together politicians, local authorities, industry, and urban transport practitioners with the European Commission aiming to connect, share, and discuss the latest developments in smart, inclusive, and sustainable mobility planning and solutions. The event was organised together with the upcoming Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU. The conference combined two leading events from Europe’s transport calendar: the CIVITAS Forum and the former European Conference on Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs). GREEN-LOG was presented at the Pitch session on 6th October. The project also shared a booth with other two Horizon Europe projects (DECARBOMILE and URBANE) at the event’s exhibition. Our partners were happy to explain our work to numerous visitors to the stand. On 3rd October, a day before the Urban Mobility Days, the CIVITAS Initiative side events took place where our partners from Netcompany-Intrasoft, Eurecat, University of the Aegean, POLIS Network, & MobyX shared their experiences and views with other EU (co-)funded projects in urban logistics shaping the way for more joint actions.
